What we want is for our window of tolerance
to represent our informed decisions and
empowerment to help ensure a healthy
balance of hyper or hypoarousal around
technology.
The green bit is the optimal state of arousal
where human beings can function and make
meaningful change. It’s about finding
comfortability in this brand new world, in a way
that centres our values.
Within our window of tolerance, we accept
that this is about progress, not perfection. For
example, no one but the companies designing
this technology can have ultimate control over
how ethical it is (and even then, there might be
factors outside of their control, despite best
efforts).
However, by being empowered and making
thoughtful choices within our window of
tolerance, we can make our impact on the
world a significantly more positive one.
Here are some tips for beginning your AI
empowerment journey:
1. Immerse yourself: learn about how AI is
impacting your industry, its capabilities and
limitations, pros and cons, where it still
continues to need human help (for example,
critical thinking, highly specialised fields,
human concepts – Shevonne wrote a great
Linkedin post about this recently).
2. Collaborate: sometimes when we ask our
team, they have better ideas than we could
have ever imagined. How could you work with
AI, how could it make your lives easier? What’s
your collective window of tolerance? What
opportunities, growth, learning, extra training
could you lean into? How could you lead your
industry in this change? Don’t be afraid to
address difficult topics.

3. Robust governance: as with any new tool,
frameworks, policies, onboarding, training,
building confidence, and understanding
boundaries (and, dare we say it, learning
through mistakes) is just as important as
choosing the right tool. We will undoubtedly
see more legislation over time, but until then,
what governance can you put in place to
support your window of tolerance?
4. Organisation value review: align your
human oriented values and goals with your AI
tools and governance. For example, just
because you can have efficiency, doesn’t
always mean that efficiency is best for your
business. Think about how you can use AI to
support and enhance your values, and how this
creates better workforces and services for
humans/the world.
5. Understanding your workforce as your
greatest asset: AI is only as valuable as what
humans input into it (at this point in time). It’s
a master of pattern recognition and
information recall – based on the work of
humans. Your biggest asset in the workplace
remains the wealth of ideas, creativity and
innovation that comes from real human brains.
When a person can offload the mundane, time
consuming and chaotic, they can then focus
on higher value work. How can AI support your
workforce rather than replace it?
In summary, the future can be that of values
aligned abundance if we are empowered in our
decisions about how we use these tools,
together.
