ONCE UPON A DEI:
THE INTRUIGING DISNEY CASE STUDY.
HÉLOÏSE DUMOULIN [SHE/HER]
It’s time to re-think
representation and why inclusion
needs more than a colour swap.
The debate around Disney’s recent casting
choices, particularly Rachel Zegler as Snow
White, has sparked heated conversations.
For some, the uproar is about straying from
the original story; for others, it's clearly laced
with bias, becoming fodder for far-right
outrage.
But, beyond the noise, it’s worth asking: how
do people of colour (POC) truly feel about this
shift?
And more importantly, are these efforts at
inclusivity meaningful—or merely surface-level?
Disney has undeniably made progress in
recent years, which is a credit to its inclusion
commitment. Films like Moana, Encanto, and
The Princess and the Frog have been
celebrated for centring non-Western cultures
and characters, and for showcasing rich,
diverse storytelling. Many have welcomed this
evolution—it’s vital for children to see
themselves reflected on screen.
Representation matters.
