RUNNING ON PURE
BELIEF.
When all you’ve got is your running shoes
and a bursting heart, how can you
compete?
Welcome to 2026, the year of the horse. I9d like
to start the year with a little anecdote from my
childhood. When I was primary school aged, I
used to spend school holidays with my Nana. I
loved my Nana because she was so nurturing
and funny; she had a shining aura about her. She
could fix any ailment with eucalyptus and a kiss.
She had the best treats - like the light blue PK
chewing gum. Despite the widespread
distribution, the ones Nana gave us tasted the
best.
One school holidays I was on Nana9s farm,
roaming around the apple trees. Nana was out
the back hanging out washing on the old twirling
clothes line. To my left, enjoying the fallen
apples, was Nana9s Shetland pony.
I was wary of the pony, and kept my distance. I
wasn9t sure why but I was a bit scared of horses.
Then without warning, the next door neighbour
started up his whipper snipper by the fence. I
jumped, the Shetland jumped, and her jumping
set me off.
Nana would recall fondly seeing me running into
the backyard screaming that the horse was
chasing me, and the pony running after me.

I ran around to hide behind Nana, and the
horse ran around to hide behind me, like 8are
we safe?9 Of course, I didn9t quite understand
the power of the horse at that age OR the fact
that horse was mirroring me OR that the horse
would go on to teach me so much about
leadership. You see, you can9t pull the wool
over a horses9 eyes; they are sensing animals.
You can put on your best front, but they will
look through your soul.
This energy is such a beautiful reflection of
where we are, and the world is, now. The
facades of yesteryear are crumbling away.
Success is being re-written. Authenticity is
being re-designed, and in some ways,
reclaimed. Despite being in a messy, and dare
we say, heartbreaking era, we are leaning more
into what makes us inherently human; a
yearning for collective care and power.
It9s the perfect year to re-write the rules of
leadership, careers and business. Much like we
can9t fool the horse, we also can9t fool
ourselves with frameworks, tools and
strategies that no longer work. What9s the
currency of 2026? Impact. It turns out all you
need is some good running shoes and a dash
of self-belief to get started.
